The Threat to Kiribati

The people of Kiribati are afraid that one day in the not-too-distant future, their countrywill disappear from the face of the earth literally. Several times this year, the Pacific islandnation has been flooded by a sudden high tide. These tides, which swept across the island anddestroyed houses, came when there was neither wind nor rain. "This never happened before,"say the older citizens of Kiribati.

What is causing these mysterious high tides? The answer may well be global warming. When fuels like oil and coal are being burned, pollutants (污染物) are released; thesepollutants trap heat in the earth's atmosphere. Warmer temperatures cause water to expand andalso create more water by melting glaciers (冰川) and polar (极地的) ice caps.

If the trend continues, scientists say, many countries will suffer, Bangladesh, for example, might lose one-fifth of its land. The coral (珊瑚) island nations of the Pacific, like Kiribati andthe Marshall Islands, however, would face an even worse fate -- they would be swallowed bythe sea. The loss of these coral islands would be everyone's loss. Coral formations are home tomore species than any other place on earth.

The people of these nations feel frustrated. The sea, on which their economies have alwaysbeen based, is suddenly threatening their existence. They don't have the money for expensivetechnological solutions like seawalls. And they have no control over the pollutants, which arebeing released mainly by activities in large industrialized countries. All they can do is to hopethat industrialized countries will take steps to reduce pollution.

1. [A] by way of[B] as well as [C] on behalf of [D] with regard to

2. [A] adapt to [B] provide for [C]compete with [D] decide on

3. [A] close [B] renew [C]arrange[D] postpone

4. [A] In theory[B] Above all [C] In time[D] For example

A In theory

5. [A] Although[B] Lest [C] After [D] Unless

6. [A] into [B] within[C] from [D] through

A into

【解析】原文:each family investigates the other to make sure its child is marrying _______ a good family. 故选A。

7. [A] sine [B] or[C] but [D] so

8. [A] test [B]copy [C]recite [D] create

Buddhist priests offer a short sermon and______ prayers of blessing.

9. [A] folding [B] piling [C] wrapping [D] tying

【答案】D

【解析】原文:________ cotton threads soaked in holy water around the bride's and groom's wrists, 把浸泡在圣水中的棉线______在新娘和新郎的手腕。

10. [A] lighting [B] passing [C] hiding [D] serving

【答案】B

【解析】原文: around a circle of happily married and respected couples to bless the union.

11. [A] meeting [B] association [C] collection[D]union

12. [A] grow [B] part [C] deal [D]live

13. [A] whereas [B] until [C] for[D] if

14. [A] obtain [B] follow[C] challenge[D]avoid

【答案】 A

填入词应与legal感情色彩一致,故排除avoid(避免)及challenge(挑战,质疑),而follow(跟随)一词通常不与divorce搭配。

15. [A] isolated [B] persuaded[C] viewed [D] exposed

16. [A]wherever [B] however [C] whenever[D]whatever

17. [A] changed [B] brought [C] shaped [D] pushed

18. [A] divided[B] invested [C] donated [D] withdrawn

【答案】A

19. [A]clears [B] warms[C] shows[D] breaks

C选项show up意为"显现,出现"。

20. [A]while [B] so what[C]once [D] in that

【答案】A

France, which prides itself as the global innovator of fashion, has decided its fashion industry has lost an absolute right to define physical beauty for woman. Its lawmakers gave preliminary approval last week to a law that would make it a crime to employ ultra-thin models on runways. The parliament also agreed to ban websites that" incite excessive thinness" by promoting extreme dieting.

Such measures have a couple of uplifting motives. They suggest beauty should not be defined by looks that end up with impinging on health. That's a start. And the ban on ultra-thin models seems to go beyond protecting models from starring themselves to health -as some have done. It tells the fashion industry that it move take responsibility for the signal it sends women, especially teenage girls, about the social tape -measure they must use to determine their individual worth. The bans, if fully enforced ,would suggest to woman (and many men )that they should not let others be orbiters of their beauty .And perhaps faintly, they hint that people should look to intangible qualities like character and intellect rather than dieting their way to sine zero or wasp-waist physiques .

The French measures, however, rely too much on severe punishment to change a culture that still regards beauty as skin-deep-and bone-showing. Under the law, using a fashion model that

American Sports

The United States is a sports-loving nation. Sports in America take a variety of forms: organized competitive struggles, which draw huge crowds to cheer their favorite team to victory; athletic games, played for recreation anywhere sufficient space is found; and hunting and fishing. Most sports are seasonal, so that what is happening in sports depends upon the time of year. Some sports are called spectator sports, as the number of spectators greatly exceeds the number playing in the game.Baseball is the most popular sport in the US. It is played throughout the spring and summer, and professional baseball teams play well into the fall. Although no other game is exactly like baseball, perhaps the one most nearly like it is the English game of cricket.

Football is the most popular sport in the fall. The game originated as a college sport more than 75 years ago. It is still played by almost every college and university in the country, and the football stadiums of some of the largest universities seat as many as 80, 000 people. The game is not the same as European football or soccer. In American football there are 11 players on each team, and they are dressed in padded uniforms and helmets because the game is rough and injuries are likely to occur.

Basketball is the winter sport in American schools and colleges. Like football, basketball originated in the US and is not popular in other countries. Many Americans prefer it to football because it is played indoors throughout the winter and because it is a faster game. It is a very popular game with high schools, and in more than 20 states, state-wide high school matches are held yearly.

Other spectator sports include wrestling, boxing, and horse racing. Although horse-racing fans call themselves sportsmen, the accuracy of the term is questionable, as only the jockeys who ride the horses in the races can be considered athletes. The so-called sportsmen are the spectators, who do "not assemble" primarily to see the horses race, but to bet upon the outcome of each race. Gambling is the attraction of horse racing.

Washoe Learned American Sign Language

1 An animal that influenced scientific thought has died. A chimpanzee named Washoe and horn in Africa died of natural causes late last month at the age of 42 at a research center in the American state of Washington. Washoe had become known in the scientific community and around the world for her ability to use American Sign Language. She was said to be the first non-human to learn a human language. Her skills also led to debate about primates and their ability to understand language.

2 Research scientists Allen and Beatrix Gardner began teaching Washoe sign language in 1966. In 1969, the Oardners described Washoe's progress in a scientific report. The people who experimented with Washoe said she grew to understand about 250 words. For example, Washoe made signs to communicate when it was time to eat. She could request foods like apples and bananas. She also asked questions like, "Who is coming to play?" One the news about Washoe spread, many language scientists began studies of their own into this new and exciting area of research. The whole direction of primate research changed.

3 However, critics argued Washoe only learned to repeat sign language movements from watching her teachers. They said she had never developed true language skills. Even now there are some researchers who suggest that primates learn sign language only by memory, and perform the signs only for prizes. Yet Washoe's

keepers disagree. Roger Fours is a former student of the Gardners. He took Washoe to a research center in Ellensburg, Washington. There, Washoe taught sign language to three younger chimpanzees, which are still alive.

4 Scientists like private researcher Jane Goodall believe Washoe provided new information about the mental workings of chimpanzees. Today, there are not as many scientists studying language skills with chimps. Part of the reason is that this kind of research takes a very long time.

5 Debate continues about chimps' understanding of human communication. Yet, one thing is sure-Washoe changed popular ideas about the possibilities of animal intelligence.
