When designing a building, the most important thing to take into account is the intended use of the building rather than its outward appearance. to what extent do you agree or disagree。

It is more important for a building to serve a purpose than to look beautiful. Architects shouldn’t worry about producing building as a work of art. Do you agree or disagree?

useful beautiful

I agree with the view presented above that function should come first in architecture, although I have no intention to deny that beauty is also an important element.

In essence, any building is constructed to serve a purpose, which might beaccommodating, storing, recreating, entertaining, manufacturing and so forth. Therefore utility is widely recognized by most architects and the general

public as well. It is especially practical today to consider such characteristics asspatial grammar, convenience, firmness, material cost and construction speed in the residential construction due to the stress on house access from the increasing population and the development of urbanization. Focusing on function is also a cost saving practice as

various ornaments which serve no obvious function would be simplified at the greatest extent or even eliminated. (定

However, artistic structures can be seen in many places around the world. Human has the nature to pursue beauty and express their feelings through art worksand architecture definitely is one of them by which this goal can be

achieved. Over emphasis on architectural function tends to global similarity asinternational tourists have witnessed. In contrast, a building with certainaesthetic value is always unique and therefore adorned by local people or even

foreigners and cherished as a cultural treasure, such as the Bird’s Nest and theWater Cube in Beijing which have been not only an ordinary Olympic stadium or a swimming pool but also a hot tourist spot due to their unique splendid

exterior. However, the external appearance should not be the most important consideration asa good looking but less useful building is just a waste of substantial resources such as wood, steel, cement, energy sources and labor force, all of which have to be invested in construction.

In my personal view, it would be ideal that a building satisfies both functional and aesthetic aspects. If these two cannot be achieved simultaneously, then function should be taken as the priority instead of the outward look.

In the past, buildings often reflected the culture of a society but today all modern buildings look alike and cities throughout the world are becoming more and more similar. What do you think is the reason for this, and is it a good thing or a bad thing?Model Answer:

Every city has its architectural character, but the similarities between cities are more obvious these days than in the past. In my opinion, one reason for this is the high price of land.

In most large cities, land is scarce and consequently it is very valuable. This has led to the construction of tall buildings which occupy only a small area of land while providing lots of floor space where people can live or work. Buildings of this type are made of concrete and steel and can be built comparatively quickly using prefabricated materials. They do not use local materials, such as stone, timber or brick, which used to give cities their individual character. In consequence many cities. now look very much the same and you might not know whether you were in Brisbane, Bangkok or Berlin when you are on the street.

While I realise that we cannot stand in the way of progress, I believe that cities should try to keep some individuality. For example, in Paris it is prohibited to build very tall

buildings in the centre of the city, as this would spoil the overall appearance of the skyline. Other cities have chosen to design unique buildings to ensure they look different. The twin towers in Kuala Lumpur or the Opera House in Sydney are examples of this approach, and I agree with this kind of initiative.

All in all, although it is regrettable that modem cities look similar, I tend to feel that this is unavoidable. However, it can be argued that, even if the buildings are similar, cities will maintain their own character as a result of cultural diversity, the terrain and the climate, which ultimately determine how people live.

Modern buildings are appearing in large numbers but some people

believe that we should build our buildings in traditional styles. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

In recent years, an interesting trend has emerged. Countries with long histories and rich cultures have been modernizing the quickest, especially in terms of architecture. Many have criticized this as not respecting traditional

culture. While traditional architecture should be protected, however, I feel it is not necessary to stop building modern structures as we move forward. One reason for this is that modern buildings are more practical and

comfortable to live and work in. While traditional buildings might look nice from the outside, they are often not very user-friendly. Modern buildings usually have lots of windows and light and are clean and energy efficient. Surely this will make those inside them happier.

Another point to consider is that modern buildings will give a good

impression to those visiting from abroad. Consider Beijing during the

Olympics, for example. Many foreigners were surprised to see all of the

stunning new building designs. In the long run, this will probably attract more business and tourists to the country.

Of course, traditional architecture still has its value. Everyone loves visiting famous historical places and admiring architectural styles from

throughout history. We should protect and appreciate such places for future generations, but at the same time, we don’t have to live in the past.

Ultimately, each city needs to find its own balance between “old” and “new” when it comes to building styles, but modern buildings are for sure a positive thing. After all, if we don’t continue to explore new building styles we won’t be able to let future generations know what our period of history was like.(264 words)

Harvey点评:

写作线索:首段,现代建筑必要;第二段,因为现代建筑的实用性和舒适性;

After all, if we don’t continue to explore new building styles we won’t be able to let future generations know what our period of history was like.(毕竟,如果我们不继续开发新建筑的风格,我们的下一代将不会知道我们这一代的历史是什么样)历史是相对的,对于我们的子孙来说,我们现在的现代化建筑将成为他们眼里的古代建筑。

emerge vi.

architecture n.

practical adj.实用的

user-friendly adj.

stunning adj.

admire v.

in the long run从长远看

after all 毕竟
