This semester, we saw the movie —《The old man and the sea》. The movie which was adapted from the novel written by Hemingway tells us a story about an old man fight against the nature.
The novel narrates an old fisherman named Santiago didn’t catch a fish after 84 days on the sea. Finally, he made a decision that going fishing to the unfamiliar sea area. Luckily, he discovered a huge marlin. After fierce fighting, he conquered the marlin despite he was exhausted. Drawn the short straw, the smell of marlin’s blood attracted the sharks. Sharks raided the old man and bit the meat of marlin. The old man resisted the attack from the sharks desperately. However, when he went back the harbor, there was only the marlin’s skeleton left. And there were many discussions about the skeleton among people in harbor.
Although the old man failed again and again, he was never disappointed. His calm showed us a matchless strong heart. Despite Santiago is old and miserable, he would never like to quit. He persisted in struggling with the destiny. Sometimes our destiny can not be dominated by us. But we can confront the fate optimistically and accept it calmly.
A man can be destroyed but not defeated. Though our human body can be tormented, our determination can never be encroached. The marlin is a
symbol of our dreams. Meanwhile, the sharks represent the setback which we can not avoid. The unpredictable sea looks like our realistic society where a great many people pursue their dreams uemittingly and never give up.
When we pursue our dreams and conquered, whether the marlin is complete or incomplete is nothing, because our significance of life has been reflected in the process of chasing the marlin. On the one hand, the old man is a loser, because his marlin was eaten by sharks at last. He got nothing in the end. On the other hand, Santiago is a winner that he didn’t compromise and surrender to the sea, marlin and sharks even if he has used all his weapons up. The old man was a lonely traveler on the dream road, but he is also not alone, because his strong will accompanies with him. No matter what result the old man got, his spirit is esteemed by us, because he brings us the great confidence that a brave man has.
Our life is full of rough and misfortune, only if we have a confident mind to meet the challenges bravely and tenaciously can we be real winners. We are supposed to believe the faith that a man is not born to be defeated. Even though we are faced with the unconquerable nature, we could also obtain moral victory. Maybe the result is failure. We could witness the procedure that an ordinary person becomes an upright man. Whatever the adversity is, we have to be indomitable and not to capitulate. We are supposed to believe that we can be destroyed but not
defeated.

This year winter vacation, I read the american well-known writerHemingway's novel”Old man and the sea”
It seems to be that Santiago is a poor old man. Hemingway refining the language of their own to shape the image, it can be said that Hemingway didn’t let the elderly achieved success,however has been given under the pressure of the elderly in the image of elegance and fortitude.
Hemingway's novel won the Nobel Prize for Literature and the Pulitzer Prize. The tough guy writer, the proper strength to write his life, tell us how to deal with birth, old age, sickness and death, tells us how wide the heart, such as the sea in general. The elderly are lonely, he was approached in an ideal road trip travelers, but he is not lonely, because his will is so strong.
After reanding this book, I know less than their own. From than on, I don’t cair what kind of difficulties encountered, we must face with confidence, insisted in the end, and never say die!

在这个寒假，我阅读了美国著名作家海明威的小说“老人与海”
看上去桑提亚哥（Stantiago）似乎是个又穷又老的人，海明威(Hemingway)以自己精炼的语言塑造了这个形象，可以说，海明威没有让老人成功，却赋予老人在压力下优雅而坚强的形象。
海明威的这部小说荣获了诺贝尔文学奖和普利策奖。这个硬汉作家，恰当地写出了生命的强度，告诉我们怎么去面对生、老、病、死，告诉我们心该有多宽，就像大海一样。老人是孤独的，他是在理想的道路上前行的旅行者，但他又是不孤独的，因为他的意志是那样的坚强。
读完这本书以后，我明白了自己以往的不足，从今以后，不管我遇到多大的困难，我都有足够的自信去面对，坚持到底，永不言弃！

Reading Report of The Old Man and the Sea
The Old Man and the Sea was written by an American writer named Ernest Hemingway. It has been translated into tens of languages, and the writer was so proud of his work.
Santiago, the hero of the story, had gone eighty-four days without taking a fish back. At first, a boy named Manolion had been with him, but Santiago couldn’t catch even one fish. The boy had gone at his parents’ orders in a lucky boat which caught three good fish the first week, and the couple thought that it was definitely and finally bad to let their boy stay with the old fisherman. On Santiago’s eighty-fifth day of fishing, he went out alone, leaving the smell of the land behind and rowing out into the clean early morning smell of ocean. To his surprise, he caught a tuna which he had never seen before and it was hard to believe that the tuna was bigger than his boat. Later, the blood from the tuna left a trail for all sharks as wide as a highway, so fighting against sharks was unavoidable. The result was that sharks ate up all the meat of the tuna and Santiago only brought the tuna skeleton back. He was so tired that he slept deeply as soon as he got home, dreaming of lions.
In this story, Santiago was an old and poor widow though he was good at fishing and had so much valuable experience. He only lived on fishing all his life. At long last, he just brought the skeleton back, you may think such a fisherman should be a loser, but this result didn’t mean failing. On the contrary, Hemingway used the skeleton which was the pillar of spirit to strengthen the meaning of the old man’s life. Santiago was described as a perfect person who never gave up.
The boy named Manolion appeared in the beginning and at the end. Even during Santiago’s voyage, he always came to the poor old man’s mind. He was the only person who cared Santiago sincerely, trust Santiago absolutely, and the young boy wanted to be an inheritor of Santiago’s career. Hemingway not only told us the experience of fishing should be spread from generation to generation, but also expected us to admire, to learn from and to carry on the spirit of Santiago. The appearance of Manilion was not by chance, which was arranged by Hemingway. During Santiago’s long voyage, how much he wished the boy could have been with him to drive his loneliness away. Youth is the symbol of energy and hope. Even an old man can be young inside. Lions appeared several times in Santiago’s dreams for they were living in his heart, which showed the spirit of Santiago would never be low.
The coming of the sharks could not be avoided. They can be thought as attack which can swallow your success and happiness. The story tells me to face the problems happened in my life with a heart as wide as ocean. Though the old man was lonely, he was a traveler who walked on the road of realizing his ideals.
