篇一:中国春节的英文简介

Spring Festival is on the traditional Chinese festivals.People used to call it "the Lunar New Year".It always starts between january the first and february the twentie its the most important festival in China

Spring Festival

The most important festival in China is the Spring Festival. It is said that the Spring Festival evolved from an activity known as the Winter Sacrifice. It was a custom practiced by the people of primitive society. The Spring Festival marks the beginning of the Chinese Lunar New Year,so the first meal is rather important. People usually eat Jiaozi or dumplings shaped like a crescent moon on that special day. As for recreational activities during the Sping Festival, the Dragon Dance and Lion Dance are traditionally performed .

One legend goes that the beast Nian had a very big mouth that would swallow a great many people with one bite. People were very scared.

传说有一个叫“年”的怪兽,有一个大嘴,能一口吞下很多人。人们都很怕它。 The custom of putting up red paper and firing fire-crackers is to scare away Nian. 贴红纸和方鞭炮的习俗就是为了吓跑年。

However, people today have long forgotten why they are doing all this, except that they feel the color and the sound add to the excitement of the celebration. 但是,现在人们大多忘记了为什么这么做的原因,只是觉得色彩和响声增加了过节的气氛罢了!

Traditions of Chinese New Year

Before New Year's Eve

The celebration actually starts on New Year's Eve with the

family reunion dinner. By New Year's Eve, you should have

done the following:

Clean the entire home to get rid of all the things that are

associated with the old year.

Put away all brooms and brushes.

Pay all your debts.

Resolve differences with family members, friends, neighbors and business associates.

Buy the following:

Red money envelopes,

Oranges and/or tangerines,

Fill a "Cheun hup(a circular red tray separated in eight compartments) with melon seedslotuschocolate coinsnuts etc.

Flowers (especially plum blossoms, peach blossoms, water lilies),

A new set of clothes and shoes for children, preferably something red or orange.

Get new dollar bills from the bank. Insert the new dollar bills into the red

envelopes. Now the red envelope is called a lai see or lucky money envelope.

On New Year's Eve

Get together with close family members (not including married daughters and their families) for the "reunion" dinner.

Pay respect to ancestors and household gods. Acknowledge the presence of ancestors because they are responsible for the fortunes of future generations. Open every door and window in your home at midnight to let go of the old year.

On New Year's Day

Decorate your home with symbols of good fortune. Here are some suggestions:

Colors: Bright red (happiness); gold/orange (wealth & happiness).

Fruits: Oranges and tangerines (good health & long life); tangerines with leaves intact (long lasting relationships; being fruitful and multiply); persimmons (happiness and wealth).

"Chuen Hup" circular candy tray (candy for sweet and circular for togetherness and continuity).

Flowers: If flowers bloom on New Year's Day, it will be a prosperous year.

Red banners or couplets with New Year wishes and symbols of good fortune in gold.

The spring festival is also known as the lunar New Year or the Chinese New Year. It is the most important traditional festival in China and celebrated in late January or early February. The historical reason for beginning the year during cold weather is that it is the time between the "autumn harvest and winter storage and "spring plowing and summer weeding".In other words, this is the time for rest and relaxation after a year's toil ,and for celebration as well.

In addition to the practical reasons of having the Spring Festival during the cold weather,a Chinese folklore offers another explanation. According to Chinese legends, a demon called Nian would torment people once a year during the winter time. So people gathered together to discuss how to deal with Nian. Some suggested that the demon was afraid of the red color, flames and loud noises. So they put paired red couples on their gates, set off firecrackers and beat gongs and drums to drive away Nian. These acts worked and Nian fled, Thus, the customs of celebrating the Spring Festival were born and passed down until today.

The eve of the Spring Festival is a time for the whole family to get together for a big dinner party. So no matter how far away a family members is from his home, he will try this best to come back in time for the family reunion dinner. Fish is a must on the dinner table, as it has the same sound as "surplus" and whole family will usually watch the holiday special TV programmes together. At midnight, people used to set off firecrackers to bring in the new year.but recent years this custom has been forbidden in cities because of the fear of causing a fire. Instead , townspeople put on electric firecrackers or red lanterns. Some people also post painting of the Door God on the gates, while some post a big Chinese character"Fu(blessing)" in an upside down way, meaning the blessing has arrived at the door.

The Spring Festival lasts 3 days. On the first day, people put on their new clothes and shoes and exchange new year greetings with their neighbours and relatives. They will greet each other with"Happy New Year",

"wish you a happy and prosperous year" Children especially like the Spring Festival, as they can get "lucky money(that means money wrapped in a red paper envelop wishing them good luck) from their parents and relatives, lion dances and dragon dances are performed, especially in the countryside, besides, people play Mahjong at home.

篇二:春节英文简介

Detailed Introduction of Spring Festival

The Spring Festival is the most important festival for the Chinese people and is when all family members get together, just like Christmas in the West. All people living away from home go back, becoming the busiest time for transportation systems of about half a month from the Spring Festival. Airports, railway stations and long-distance bus stations are crowded with home returnees.

The Spring Festival falls on the 1st day of the 1st lunar month, often one month later than the Gregorian calendar. It originated in the Shang Dynasty (c. 1600 BC-c. 1100 BC) from the people‘s sacrifice to gods and ancestors at the end of an old year and the beginning of a new one.

Strictly speaking, the Spring Festival starts every year in the early days of the 12th lunar month and will last till the mid 1st lunar month of the next year. Of them, the most important days are Spring Festival Eve and the first three days. The Chinese government now stipulates people have seven days off for the Chinese Lunar New Year.

Many customs accompany the Spring Festival. Some are still followed today, but others have weakened.

On the 8th day of the 12th lunar month, many families make laba porridge, a delicious kind of porridge made with beans and

rice.

The 23rd day of the 12th lunar month is called Preliminary Eve. At this time, people offer sacrifice to the kitchen god. Now however, most families make delicious food to enjoy themselves. After the Preliminary Eve, people begin preparing for the coming New Year. This is called "Seeing the New Year in".

Store owners are busy then as everybody goes out to purchase necessities for the New Year. Materials not only include edible oil, rice, flour, chicken, duck, fish and meat, but also fruit, candies and kinds of nuts. What‘s more, various decorations, new clothes and shoes for the children as well as gifts for the elderly, friends and relatives, are all on the list of purchasing.

Before the New Year comes, the people completely clean the indoors and outdoors of their homes as well as their clothes, bedclothes and all their utensils.

Then people begin decorating their clean rooms featuring an atmosphere of rejoicing and festivity. All the door panels will be pasted with Spring Festival couplets, highlighting Chinese calligraphy with black characters on red paper. The content varies from house owners‘ wishes for a bright future to good luck for the New Year. Also, pictures of the god of doors and wealth will be posted on front doors to ward off evil spirits and welcome peace and abundance.

The Chinese character "fu" (meaning blessing or happiness) is a must. The character put on paper can be pasted normally or upside down, for in Chinese the "reversed fu" is homophonic with "fu comes", both being pronounced as "fudaole." What‘s more, two big red lanterns can be raised on both sides of the front door. Red paper-cuttings can be seen on window glass and brightly colored New Year paintings with auspicious meanings may be put on the wall.

Spring Festival is a time for family reunions, for visits with friends, for good wishes for the coming year. In addition, the whole family will eat dumpling together. On the first day of the Spring Festival, friends and relatives will call on each other to exchange greetings and wish another the happiest possible New Year.

Guo Nian," meaning "passing the year" in Chinese is the common name among the Chinese people for the Spring Festival. It actually means greeting the New Year. At midnight at the turn of the old and New Year, people used to let off firecrackers, which serve to drive away the evil spirits and to greet the arrival of the New Year. In an instant the whole city would be engulfed in the deafening noise of the firecrackers.

People also enjoy all sorts of entertainment, going to the temple fairs, treating themselves to the local delicacies, and watching performances of folk art forms, which usually include ballads

singing, story telling, comic dialogues, clapper talk and cross talk. During this period, quarrels are to be avoided. Words with bad connotations such as defeat, illness, surgical operations, a coffin or death are not to be used. Dishes are handled carefully, for breaking a dish on New Year's Day indicate bad luck for the coming year.

The Lantern Festival falls on the 15th day of the 1st lunar month, usually in February or March in the Gregorian calendar. As early as the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 25), it had become a festival with great significance. This day's important activity is watching lanterns. Lanterns of various shapes and sizes are hung in the streets, attracting countless visitors. Children will hold self-made or bought lanterns to stroll with on the streets, extremely excited."Guessing lantern riddles"is an essential part of the Festival. People will eat yuanxiao, or rice dumplings, on this day, so it is also called the "Yuanxiao Festival."Yuanxiao also has another name, tangyuan. Tangyuan can be boiled, fried or steamed. It tastes sweet and delicious. What's more, tangyuan in Chinese has a similar pronunciation with "tuanyuan”, meaning reunion. So people eat them to denote union, harmony and happiness for the family.

In the daytime of the Festival, performances such as a dragon lantern dance, a lion dance, a land boat dance, a yangge dance,

walking on stilts and beating drums while dancing will be staged. On the night, except for magnificent lanterns, fireworks form a beautiful scene. Some local governments will even organize a fireworks party.

篇三:春节风俗英文介绍及英文祝福语

The Spring Festival is a traditional Chinese festival and also the most important one of the whole year. Through the evolvement of thousands of years, a series of customs are spreading far and wide.

扫尘 Sweeping the Dust

“Dust” is homophonic with “chen”(尘)in Chinese, which means old and past. In this way, “sweeping the dust” before the Spring Festival means a

thorough cleaning of houses to sweep away bad luck in the past year. This

custom shows a good wish of putting away old things to welcome a new life.

In a word, just before the Spring Festival comes, every household will

give a thorough cleaning to bid farewell to the old year and usher in the

new.

贴春联 Pasting Spring Couplets

“The Spring Couplet”, also called “couplet” and “a pair of antithetical

phrases”, is a special form of literature in China. The Spring Couplet is

composed of two antithetical sentences on both sides of the door and a

horizontal scroll bearing an inscription, usually an auspicious phrase,

above the gate. The sentence pasting on the right side of the door is

called the first line of the couplet and the one on the left the second

line. On the eve of the Spring Festival, every household will paste on

doors a spring couplet written on red paper to give a happy and prosperous

atmosphere of the Festival. In the past, the Chinese usually wrote their

own spring couplet with a brush or asked others to do for them, while

nowadays, it is common for people to buy the printed spring couplet in the

market.

贴窗花和“福”字 Pasting Paper-cuts and “Up-sided Fu”

Paper-cuts, usually with auspicious patterns, give a happy and prosperous

atmosphere of the Festival and express the good wishes of Chinese people

looking forward to a good life. In addition to pasting paper-cuts on

windows, it is common for Chinese to paste the character “fu(福)”, big and small, on walls, doors and doorposts around the houses. “Fu(福)” shows people’s yearning toward a good life. Some people even invert the

character “fu(福)” to signify that blessing has arrived because “inverted” is a homonym for “arrive” in Chinese. Now many kinds of paper-cuts and

“fu(福)” can be seen in the market before the Festival.

守岁 Staying Up Late on New Year's Eve

The tradition of staying up late to see New Year in originated from an

interesting folk tale. In ancient China there lived a monster named Year,

who was very ferocious. Year always went out from its burrow on New Year’s Eve to devour people. Therefore, on every New Year’s Eve, every household

would have supper together. After dinner, no one dared go to sleep and all

the family members would sit together, chatting and emboldening each

other. Gradually the habit of staying up late on New Year’s Eve is formed.

Thus in China, “celebrating the Spring Festival” is also called “passing

over the year (guo nian)”. However, now there are less and less people in

cities who will stay up late to see New Year in.

贴年画 Pasting New Year Prints

The custom of pasting New Year Prints originated from the tradition of

placing Door Gods on the external doors of houses. With the creation of

board carvings, New Year paintings cover a wide range of subjects. The

most famous ones are Door Gods, Surplus Year after Year, Three Gods of

Blessing, Salary and Longevity, An Abundant Harvest of Crops, Thriving

Domestic Animals and Celebrating Spring. Four producing areas of New Year Print are Tɑohuɑwu of Suzhou, Yɑngliuqing of Tianjin, Wuqiɑng of Hebei and Weifang of Shangdong. Now the tradition of pasting New Year paintings is

still kept in rural China, while it is seldom followed in cities.

吃饺子 Having Jiaozi

On New Year’s Eve, the whole family will sit together to make jiaozi and

celebrate the Spring Festival. The shape of jiaozi is like gold ingot from

ancient China. So people eat them and wish for money and treasure. The

tradition of having jiaozi is very important during the Spring Festival.

You cannot have a complete Spring Festival without having jiaozi. (See

page 82 for more information about “jiaozi”)

看春节联欢晚会 The CCTV New Year's Gala

The New Year’s Gala is a variety show held by China Central Television

(CCTV) since 1983. For every year since then at the turn of the Lunar New

Year, the program begins at 8:00PM and lasts five or six hours. It brings

laughter to billions of people, creates many popular words and produces

lots of TV phenomena meriting attention. For over twenty years, its value

has gone far beyond a variety show. It is essential entertainment for the

Chinese both at home and abroad. Many Chinese would like to watch the gala while having the dinner on New Year’s Eve.

放鞭炮 Setting off Firecrackers

The firecracker is a unique product in China. In ancient China, the sound

of burning bamboo tubes was used to scare away wild animals and evil

spirits. With the invention of the gunpowder, “firecracker” is also called

“鞭炮biānpào” (“炮” in Chinese means gun) and used to foster a joyful atmosphere. The first thing every Chinese household does is to set off

firecrackers and fireworks, which are meant to bid farewell to the old

year and usher in the new. In the past few years, such an activity was

completely or partially forbidden in big cities including Beijing due to

fire and personal casualty caused by burning firecrackers. However, some

Chinese thought that a Spring Festival without firecrackers was not lively

enough and they burned firecrackers by stealth. So in recent years, the

ban was canceled again. This shows that burning firecrackers is a very

important activity during the Spring Festival.

拜年和压岁钱 New Year's Visit and Gift Money

On the first day of the Chinese lunar year, everybody puts on their best

clothes and pays ceremonial calls on their relatives and friends, wishing

them all the luck in the coming year. Juniors will greet seniors, wishing

them health and longevity, while seniors will give juniors some gift money

as a wish for their safety in the coming year. When friends meet, they

will wish each other happiness and prosperity with a big smile. With the

development of the new technology, there is a change on the way of giving

New Years greetings. In recent year, it is common to send New Years

greetings by such modern means of communication as telephones, emails and text messages.

逛庙会 Temple Fair

Temple fair, usually held outside temples, is a kind of folk custom in

China. During the Spring Festival, temple fair is one of the most

important activities, in which there are such performances as acrobatics

and Wushu, numerous kinds of local snacks and many kinds of things for

everyday life In recent years, the temple fair has become a place for

people to appreciate the traditional art and experience the traditional

life .

Traditional Festival Greetings:

恭贺新禧 | Happy New Year

吉祥如意 | Everything Goes Well

恭喜发财 | Wishing You Prosperity

年年有余 | Surplus Year after Year

岁岁平安 | Peace All Year Round

新春大吉 | Good Luck in the New Year

In the past two years, it has become a vogue for relatives and friends to

send short messages to greet each other during the Spring Festival. With

best wishes, the warm greetings of text messages give a happy and joyful

atmosphere of the Festival.
